Germany’s INLEAP Photonics has closed a seed funding round of EUR 20 million, led by UVC Partners, with participation from HTGF, Balnord, Sentris, and Scale Capital. The company is positioning its technology as laser-based counter-drone defence for defence and critical infrastructure applications.
What INLEAP is building
INLEAP describes its offering as laser-based drone defence, targeting the fast-growing need to detect and neutralise drones around sensitive sites. The use cases it highlights span defence and critical infrastructure, two buyer groups that have been accelerating procurement and trials across Europe.
The company’s timing is notable. The funding was announced and covered in early September 2026, landing during a period of heightened security focus where counter-UAS (uncrewed aerial systems) capabilities are being pulled forward from niche capability to baseline requirement.
Why this round matters
The funding is explicitly earmarked for execution, not exploration. INLEAP says the capital will be used to:

That mix signals a shift from R&D-heavy burn to the operational demands of manufacturing and deployment. HTGF’s continued involvement also stands out. Earlier financing included HTGF and Ventis Capital, indicating repeat backing from recognised early-stage investors as INLEAP progressed from a pre-seed round completed in summer 2025 to this larger seed raise.
Photonics shifts from enabling tech to strategic asset
INLEAP sits at the intersection of two currents: defence-tech demand and the strategic elevation of photonics. Industry body SPECTARIS has argued that photonics has direct security and defence relevance in areas including sensing, infrared optics, and laser systems, and has called for stronger support for photonics start-ups and scale-ups, including pilot lines and industrial production capacity.
INLEAP’s stated use of proceeds is essentially a company-level version of that policy agenda: build industrial capability, prove reliability at scale, and turn technical advantage into deployable systems.
Execution watchpoints
Scaling laser-based systems into defence and critical infrastructure environments brings predictable risks:
- Manufacturing and test throughput: expanding production and testing capacity is capital-intensive and can become the bottleneck.
- Procurement cycles: defence and critical infrastructure buyers can be slow-moving and compliance-heavy, even when urgency is high.
